Green Stick. What Is It?

The fever for the practice of this technique of the Green Stick began a few years ago in Japan, later it was copied and carried out successfully by some North American specialists, and from there it happened to Hawaii, where it has become the most habitual practice for its demonstrated effectiveness, and for being tremendously exciting and fun. In the world of extreme charter, the most experienced captains and skippers in the world have begun to put it into practice, especially in Costa Rica and in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

This technique is very similar to the one used in the past with the kite in distant Indonesia, since the base of the system is practically the same: raise the line so that its slit in the water, color or wake is not detected by the fish , and hang a bait from the air, at a certain distance from the ship, to give it the appearance of a real being that flees with leaps ...

The practice of the Green Stick is similar, except that instead of a kite a big stick is used high enough to raise the line and the lures, and ductile and robust enough to bend to incredible limits and cushion the strong shocks of the bites that produce the great colossi of the sea.

Green Stick or "palo verde" is associated with the ecology of directed fishing, perhaps the most selective of all the fishing practices and techniques that are known, since they limit the bites to the large tunas that feed on the surface after being Conveniently excited, and also with artificial lures, therefore, no type of live or frozen bait is required. At the same time this technique eliminates occasional catches and by accident of species such as turtles, sharks or billfish, such as marlin, swordfish or imperial needle.

The name of Green fStick or "palo verde" comes from the original raw material used by those old and wise fishermen, and is due to bamboo, since in its origins large and thick bamboo canes were used. Currently, and with the arrival of new materials, bamboo was replaced by fiberglass and carbon, and are the most used raw materials for the construction of the large mast, capable of overcoming the ship's deck or rising above the surface of the ship. Sea with heights of more than 15 meters to be able to fish at distances of 200 - 300 meters from the stern ...

Today, the Green Stick has evolved so much that it is easy to see them with telescopic formats, with a very thick base and carbon fiber, divided into a series of elements interlaced with each other, with the plugs or junctions protected with metal reinforcements. the same way we see in the telescopic rods used in any type of fishing from shore.

Another incentive that justifies the intensive use of the Green Stick is that it converts traditional and professional tuna fishing into a truly sport fishing, eliminating the use of natural bait, whether live or dead, and the inconvenience of providing it. and keep it in optimal conditions, since only artificial lures are mounted ...
